University biologists selling ornamental fish cultured from the Red Sea

Ornamental_Fish_For_Sale-Flyer-2009As part of the Department of Biological Sciences' Auburn-Jordan program, some biologists have cultured two-band anemonefish, or clownfish, from the Red Sea and have some ready for sale from their lab. The department has 10 juvenile fish for sale, with more to come, and are selling them for $15 each. The ornamental fish are two months old and 0.5 to 1.5 inches, though they will grow to about 4 inches long. Those who purchase a fish will receive up to one year of "tech support" from Auburn University biologists on how to keep their fish happy and healthy in their home aquarium. Two-band anemonefish are native to the Red Sea and associate with giant sea anemones in the wild. Captive-raised anemonefish can be kept comfortably in saltwater aquaria without anemones. The department has set up an account to receive income from local sales of the clownfish to people who have saltwater aquaria. All proceeds from the sales will go back into Auburn University's anemonefish culture program. Anyone interested in purchasing a fish should contact Joey Szczebak at szczebak@auburn.edu or (781) 405-7277, or Nanette Chadwick at chadwick@auburn.edu.
