Mabe giving artist's talk on 'Elvis: A Lifetime Obsession'
Atlanta native Joni Mabe will give an artist's talk at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at 4 p.m. tomorrow, about her work, "Elvis: A Lifetime Obsession." Mabe graduated from the University of Georgia with a master's in fine arts degree in painting and drawing. Founder of "The Panoramic Encyclopedia of Everything Elvis," she traveled the world for 14 years with her collection before permanently locating it in Cornelia, Ga., in 1999. Located in The Loudermilk Boarding House Museum, the collection holds 30,000 Elvis items including the legendary "Elvis' Wart" and the "Maybe Elvis Toenail." Also on Tuesday night, the 1956 film, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," will be shown at 6 p.m. The museum café will be open to serve its lunch menu from 4:45 to 6 p.m.
Art museum presenting 'Elvis at 21' photography exhibition
The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is presenting the exhibition, "Elvis at 21, New York to Memphis: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer," in the Bill L. Harbert Gallery from Oct. 10 - Jan. 9. The exhibition is organized in conjunction with Govinda Gallery, Washington, D.C. The images not only portray what is viewed as a more innocent period in Presley's life that would vanish in the wake of his superstardom, they also constitute an important visual document of post-World War II America. Assigned by Elvis' record label, RCA Victor, for a one-day photo shoot in 1956, Wertheimer said he was so struck by the rising young star's charisma and photogenic persona that he felt compelled to continue documenting the everyday moments in Elvis' life during that transformative year.
