Events are scheduled throughout the week and will culminate with recognition of World Food Day on Friday, Oct. 16. To read more about daily events, see the news release.

Second Hunger Seminar will be Wednesday
The second installment in the Hunger Seminar series will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in 244 Spidle Hall. Michael Mulvaney will present the seminar, "Local Food Security and The Auburn Community Garden." Interested faculty or students are welcome to attend, and no registration is necessary. The Hunger Seminar series is part of Hunger Week 2009. E-mail Alexis Sabol at ans0017@auburn.edu with any questions about the series.

Beat Bama Food Drive begins this week

The Student Government Association's 16th annual Beat Bama Food Drive begins today, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. and concludes Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. Auburn's SGA invites donations and support to feed the hungry and beat the University of Alabama. SGA accepts non-perishable food or monetary donations. Donations can be made at the SGA office and also online at this link. In addition, donations can be made at the East Alabama Food Bank at 375 Industry Drive. Call the East Alabama Food Bank at 821-9006 or e-mail ddemous@foodbankofeastalabama.com to arrange a pick-up. Donations are channeled to emergency food pantries, families on welfare, homeless individuals, the mentally ill, disaster victims, mission and rehab centers, low income day cares and senior centers. Last year, Auburn collected 212,199 pounds of food. Auburn has won nine of the 15 food drives.

‘The Beat Hunger Bash’ scheduled for tomorrow

The Committee of 19 and Auburn University’s Victoria's Secret interns will be hosting "The Beat Hunger Bash" on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  at the Sigma Chi Fraternity House. This will be an entertaining and grilling event to kick off Hunger Week. The Committee of 19 is the student organization at Auburn that leads the War on Hunger. One of the goals is to get students more actively involved in fighting both domestic and world hunger, and the Hunger Bash is a great way for individuals to contribute.

There will be free gifts from Victoria's Secret, live music by Ernest Goes to Jazz, free food and a heated grill-off competition with the winner being announced at the Auburn vs. Kentucky football game. Student organizations are encouraged to participate in the grilling competition and can win the title of “Auburn’s Next Top Grill Masters.”

Each student who attends this event must bring two non-perishable food items that will go toward the Beat Bama Food Drive. Each student organization entering the grill-off will pay a $50 entree fee that will go directly toward the War on Hunger. Students who attend and bring the required two cans of food will receive two spirit points. Every organization that participates in the grill-off will receive 50 spirit points.
