Women’s Studies Program hosting prize-winning filmmaker Elvira Dones

Auburn University Women’s Studies Program announces the visit to campus on Oct. 6 of Washington, D.C.- based filmmaker Elvira Dones.  The event takes place at 2 p.m. in the Student Center, room 2225. It is sponsored by Women’s Studies and by the University Lectures Committee.

Dones is an Albanian-born novelist and journalist as well as a screenwriter.  In 1988 Elvira Dones traveled to Switzerland for Albanian State Television and there she defected to Switzerland. She moved to Washington, D.C.,  in 2004. Her documentary, “Sworn Virgins” explores the lives of women in northern Albania who take an oath of virginity in order to enjoy the rights of men. The production won the Best Documentary Award at the Baltimore Women’s Film Festival in fall 2007. Elvira Dones will discuss her film and there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
