Coast Guard Auxiliary Eagle Detachment comes to Auburn University
The Eagle Detachment of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will have its first meeting tonight, at 6:30 p.m., at the Nichols Center, room 141. The auxiliary is open to all Auburn University students who have at least one year of college left, are at least 17 years old and who pass a basic background check. Members have an opportunity to save lives, learn boat operations, build teamwork skills and gain leadership experience.
While the Coast Guard Auxiliary does not require a military obligation after graduation, there are several possibilities for detachment members. Upon graduation, auxiliary members will fall into one of four categories. They will either be citizens with knowledge of safe boating practices, well-trained auxilarists who continue their service to Flotilla 8-9 of the auxiliary, auxilarists who transfer to other national flotillas or well trained enlistees into the Active Duty, Reserve or the Officer Candidate School of the U.S Coast Guard.
While serving in the auxiliary, members are serving in the United States Coast Guard. Auxiliarists in the Eagle Detachment will meet every Monday at 6:30 p.m. throughout the remainder of the semester and serve in several weekend events. Detachment members are asked to serve eight hours a month, and will purchase a uniform. Those interested in joining are invited to attend the first meeting. Answers to questions and more information can be found by contacting the Flotilla Chief of Staff Jake Shaw at jshaw.uscg@gmail.com or call 740-1423.
