This year’s Hey Day events will be taking place on Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The theme this year is Peace, Love, Hey Day. There will be tie-dyeing t-shirts at the UPC Tie-Dye Workshop and name tag tables set up across campus. The main locations will be the science concourse near Parker Hall, the Student Center patio and the Haley Center concourse. Students and faculty are encouraged to fill out a name tag and say “hey” to fellow classmates.
Free food and drinks will be available, along with live entertainment from the Tiger Paws, AU Rhythm and Auburn University Cheerleaders. Miss Auburn, Miss Auburn University and Aubie will all be in attendance. Dating back to World War II, Hey Day is one of the longest standing Auburn traditions. Come out and celebrate friendships and keep this tradition alive.

The Auburn University Libraries have partnered with the Office of Information Technology to offer color printing options in response to a request from students. There is now a color laser printer in the OIT lab on the third floor of RBD Library.
Questions about OIT printing may be directed to the OIT Help Desk at helpdesk@auburn.edu, by calling 844-4944 or in person on the third floor of RBD Library. RBD Library also offers printing resources in the Media and Digital Resource Lab for class-related projects. Questions about the MDRL printing may be directed to mdrl@auburn.edu, by calling 844-7398 or in person at the MDRL located on the first floor of RBD Library.

Faculty, staff and students now have an easier way to report problems with campus vending machines. By going to the following link on the TigerCard Web site at http://www.auburn.edu/administration/tigercard/vending.html, you may send a report online to expedite repairs, request refunds and provide suggestions for improvement. When completing this online form, please be sure to include the machine's outlet number, located on a sticker attached to the front upper left-hand corner.

Submissions for The Auburn Circle are due this Wednesday, Sept. 30. You can access the submissions waiver on the The Circle’s Web site by visiting http://www.auburn.edu/circle/submissions/index.php. Participants should include a waiver for every submission and send the submission via e-mail to acricle@auburn.edu.
The Auburn Circle is free to all students. Issues are published once every fall and spring. Students from all majors, alumni, faculty, staff and supporters of Auburn University are invited to submit to The Circle.

Auburn University's Army ROTC "War Eagle Battalion" proudly announces that two of its current seniors, cadet Amy Farris and cadet Timothy Presley, rank in the top 2 percent of all Army ROTC Cadets in the nation. Cadets Farris and Presley ranked 51st and 48th respectively out of the 4,702 cadets who will graduate and commission. Their ranking is based on academic, physical fitness and leadership success in the Army ROTC program. Both plan to become Army aviators.

Students are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming seminars titled "Ultimate Money Skills: College." The sessions will be this Thursday, Oct. 1, in 113A Lowder Business Building at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. It's a dynamic and energetic presentation about how choices that students make about money while in college can have a direct impact on their future financial success and can help them make better decisions during and after their time at Auburn.
Two times have been scheduled for the 50-minute seminar so that as many students as possible can attend. The free, interactive seminars will show students how to achieve the critical understanding of appropriate credit use, understand the basics of banking, design their own budget, take control of student loan debt, minimize debt to maximize wealth and protect their identity and avoid identity theft. The presentations are sponsored by monster.com, Bank of America and the Auburn Spirit Foundation for Scholarships. No products will be sold to students. The Auburn University Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts is pleased to announce reaffirmation of accredited status for the Social Work Program by the Council on Social Work Education for June 2008 to June 2016.
The social work program offers an undergraduate degree and has maintained its accredited status since 1978 for the purpose of preparing entry-level, professional social workers. The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and
Social Work is currently in the development phase of establishing a Master's of Social Work degree program with a health focus. The work accomplished by faculty and graduates of the program is strongly linked to the university's

A new minor in Hunger Studies is being offered through the College of Human Sciences. The interdisciplinary Hunger Studies Minor is intended to: provide Auburn University students with the necessary knowledge, competencies and engagement opportunities to understand hunger, including its related causes and consequences, as a complex sustainable human development issue; develop in students a skill set for global citizenship that will foster advocacy and intervention in achieving both short-term and long-term hunger solutions; and challenge students to apply cognitive processes of conceptualization, analysis, application and evaluation of information when

Auburn University Women’s Studies Program announces the visit to campus on Oct. 6 of Washington, D.C.- based filmmaker Elvira Dones. The event takes place at 2 p.m. in the Student Center, room 2225. It is sponsored by Women’s Studies and by the University Lectures Committee.
Dones is an Albanian-born novelist and journalist as well as a screenwriter. In 1988 Elvira Dones traveled to Switzerland for Albanian State Television and there she defected to Switzerland. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 2004. Her documentary, “Sworn Virgins” explores the lives of women in northern Albania who take an oath of virginity in order to enjoy the rights of men. The production won the Best Documentary Award at the Baltimore Women’s Film Festival in fall 2007. Elvira Dones will discuss her film and there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. Can art move people to protect and restore our aquatic ecosystems? That question and many more will be addressed Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. in 005 Biggin Hall by College of Agriculture scientists Bill Deutsch, Alabama Water Watch director, and Eve Brantley, Department of Agronomy and Soils water specialist, when they join Georgia-based artist Xiaotian Wang and Alabama conservation photographer Beth Maynor Young for a panel discussion on how art and science can work together to benefit the environment. The discussion is open to the public and will be followed by a book signing and reception. This event is part of "Water: Three States," a four-month long art exhibit focusing on water issues and images. The panel discussion marks the closing day of Phase I of the exhibit. Phase II will open Oct. 12, and run through Nov. 10. "Water: Three States" is the inaugural exhibit for a new initiative called Art in Agriculture that is a collaboration between the Department of Art, located in the College of Liberal Arts, and the College of Agriculture. Russell Moore, a professor of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado, will deliver a presentation titled "Aberrant cardiolipin metabolism in heart failure: The problem and a possible solution,'' today, at 3 p.m. in Haley Center 1203. The dialogue will be open and accessible to all. Moore currently serves as interim vice chancellor for research at the University of Colorado and as an adjunct professor of cardiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. A story about a breakthrough study on fire ant venom by Henry Fadamiro, associate professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, is generating serious interest in the media. An article highlighting Fadamiro's research on the use of fire ant venom alkaloids as attractants by parasitic phorid flies to help control fire ant infestations is featured in the Sept. 20 issue of U.S. News and World Report and in the Sept. 18 issue of Science News magazine. Fadamiro's professional journal article on this study is in press and will be published in Naturwissenschaften (German Nature).

Several members of the Department of Poultry Science received awards at the Poultry Science Association's annual meeting held recently in North Carolina. Professor Pat Curtis received the Phibro Extension Award and professors Ed Moran and David Roland were both inducted as PSA fellows. Moran's former graduate student, Nancy Joseph, was awarded the PSA Early Achievement Award for Industry. Associate professor Wallace Berry's current doctoral student, Lindsay Stevenson, won the Maurice Stein Fellowship Award. For more information go to www.poultryscience.org/awards2009.asp. In addition to these awards, Jessica C. Butler, a current doctoral student working with Curtis, was elected as a student representative to the PSA board of directors.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Auburn University will host a Brown Bag Lunch meeting featuring Rheta Grimsley Johnson, syndicated columnist and Auburn University graduate, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The Brown Bag Lunch will be held at the Lexington Hotel located at 1577 South College Street in Auburn. She will be discussing her book “Poor Man's Provence,” which is a rich examination of the colorful, cultural state of Louisiana, including Cajun family life, food and celebrations.

Auburn University became one of the first universities to have its own social networking Web site last week with the launch of "Auburn Family," a site designed to inform and connect current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents and fans. The site, which can be accessed at http://family.auburn.edu, allows users to manage their personal profile, upload Auburn-related photos, blogs and videos, set status updates and communicate with other members via their "comments wall" or direct messaging. The network also features current news stories about Auburn University from students' perspectives. Robert French, a public relations instructor, worked in cooperation with Auburn's Office of Communications and Marketing to develop the network. Each week, students in French's "Style and Design in Public Relations Messages" course write, blog and produce videos about news and events happening in Auburn's 13 schools and colleges. Auburn University has achieved its highest enrollment in history this fall, and its freshman class boasts the top ACT scores of any previous class, according to numbers released by Auburn's Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. Enrollment is 24,602 among all students groups, undergraduates, graduate students and those enrolled in professional schools, which is up from 24,530 in fall 2008. New freshman enrollment consists of 3,918 students, who compiled an average score of 26.2 on the ACT college entrance exam, outpacing last year's then-record of 25.9. Ben Tom "B.T." Roberts of Mobile was nominated to complete the term of the late John C.H. "Jack" Miller Jr. on the Auburn University Board of Trustees. If confirmed by the Alabama Senate, Roberts will represent Choctaw, Clarke, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Washington and Wilcox counties on the Auburn Board through May 10, 2012. Roberts was selected for the position in a unanimous vote by the Auburn University Trustee Selection Committee, which includes Gov. Bob Riley, two members of the Auburn Alumni Association's Board of Directors and two Auburn trustees. Roberts is president of Roberts Brothers Commercial and Property Management Inc. in Mobile. He graduated from Auburn in 1972 with a degree in industrial management and has been active in Auburn alumni and development activities for many years.

Disney representatives will be on campus this week recruiting for the Disney Parks and Resorts College Program. This is a one semester or two semester paid internship working for a Fortune 100 company, either at the Disneyland Resort in California or Walt Disney World in Florida.
This opportunity is open to all students including all class levels and all majors. Disney provides company-sponsored housing and transportation, and there may even be some opportunities to earn college credit.
