Welcome back and War Eagle!
Dear Students:
I am delighted to extend a hearty welcome to all new and returning students. To our new students I am excited you and your family chose Auburn to continue your education, and we welcome you to the Plains. To our returning students, welcome back; we missed you. I hope your summer has been enjoyable and productive. My family and I are delighted to join the Auburn family. Although we are new to Auburn, we are not new to the South. My wife grew up in Augusta, Ga., and I grew up in Miami. We are fans of Southeastern Conference sports and look forward to competitive seasons for all Auburn athletic teams. I came to Auburn because I believe in the leadership of this institution, the quality of the student body and the commitment of staff and faculty to be the best. I was especially drawn to the words of the Auburn Creed because I, too, “Believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.” I have had the pleasure this summer to meet with many outstanding student leaders. I met with Jacob Watkins of the Student Government Association and Sharne Rice of the University Program Council to prepare for the upcoming school year. Both organizations have some great opportunities planned for students. To name a few, SGA will introduce a late night transit system titled Toomer’s Ten and UPC is bringing back drive-in movies. I hope you will attend.
As vice president for Student Affairs I want to remind you of three important things:
1. Make a commitment to going to class. The single most important factor in your academic success in college will be your commitment to showing up for class on time and prepared. Nothing will be more valuable than the time you spend with your professors and classmates in class. Studies show that students who attend class regularly outperform those who attend sparingly by a full letter grade. Go to class.
2. Get involved. Auburn has more than 200 student clubs and organizations. I want to encourage you to get involved in a club/organization or start one of your own. Make a part of this world better through volunteering, work out in the Student Activity Center, participate in a study abroad experience or become a resident adviser. There are hundreds of opportunities to get involved here at Auburn—find your niche. Attendance is not enough, get involved.
3. Be safe. We live in one of the most beautiful and safest towns in America. In order to maintain that sense of safety and security, we must be collectively vigilant about taking care of ourselves and each other. Assist a friend in need, report suspicious behavior, ask for help when needed, and do not drink and drive. Your safety is our top priority.
The Division of Student Affairs is here to help you accomplish your academic, personal and career goals. Anything we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask. My office is located on the third floor of the Student Center. Stop by and say “hey.” Let’s have a great year. War Eagle!
