Local ACHMI teen advisory members to appear on “The Today Show”
Local teens Amal Elmogahzy, 16, and Terrence Melton, 18, will appear on NBC's "The Today Show" tomorrow, Aug. 11, on behalf of the Auburn University-sponsored Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative. The segment will air during the fourth hour of the show at 10:30 a.m. EST. Elmogahzy, an incoming junior at Auburn High School, and Melton, a 2009 Auburn High School graduate, will be featured on a teen panel to speak about their experiences as members of stepfamilies. Elmogahzy and Melton were chosen to speak on the panel because of their participation with the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative Teen Advisory Board, which promotes healthy family and peer relationships to teens throughout Alabama. The teens are two of 39 students selected from Auburn and Opelika high schools to serve on the ACHMI Teen Advisory Board. ACHMI is an applied research project and a collaboration of the Auburn University Department of Human Development and Family Studies; the Alabama Children's Trust Fund; the Alabama Cooperative Extension System; the Montgomery chapter of the 100 Black Men, a service organization focused on strengthening youth and families; and a network of community-based agencies. The initiative is intended to provide resources and educational programs for youth and adults in Alabama on the skills and knowledge necessary for building healthy, stable relationships.
