Caution urged concerning unsolicited e-mail
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) urges students and faculty to use caution in responding to unsolicited e-mail. Offers of employment, credit cards, travel or vacation deals and the like may be suspect. If you didn't initiate the conversation it is best not to respond to such e-mail offers. Your first defense is common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is and may be a phishing scam or other malicious attempt to take advantage of you. Before you respond to any unsolicited e-mail offer, confirm the information through outside sources; conduct a web search for more information or research the offer on the Department of Justice's Web site at http://www.usdoj.gov/spam.htm. You can report suspicious attempts there as well. Additionally, OIT encourages all students and faculty to protect their computers from other types of threats by keeping Windows updates current and installing the latest version of anti-virus software, available free at http://www.auburn.edu/download. For more information, visit the OIT Security Site at http://www.auburn.edu/oit/security_center/.
