Chick-fil-A founder speaking at Auburn during King Week
Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A Inc., will speak as part of King Week at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the Student Center ballroom. The talk is open to the public and will include topics such as overcoming adversity, the power of perseverance and serving others. Cathy, whose national restaurant chain grew from modest beginnings to a business sensation, is noted for his philanthropic efforts and books authored on learning life lessons. He started his restaurant business in 1946 when he and his brother, Ben, opened an Atlanta diner known as The Dwarf Grill, later renamed The Dwarf House. Through the years, that restaurant prospered and led Cathy to further the success of his business. In 1967, Cathy founded the first Chick-fil-A restaurant. Today, Chick-fil-A is the second-largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States based on annual sales. Cathy was honored along with newly named Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Atlanta on Saturday, Jan. 17, when The King Center presented them with its Salute to Greatness Awards. Auburn's King Week activities are being coordinated by Access and Community Initiatives, a unit of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
