The Big Event set for Feb. 14

100_2005The Big Event, sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), will take place Saturday, Feb. 14. Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with a group of friends, with an organization or as an individual and to serve with a team on various projects. A few examples of last year’s projects include Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club, Food Bank, Storybook Farms, Camp ASCCA, nursing homes and several other cleaning, painting and construction jobs. UPC presents Open Mic Night and free movie

eagle_eyeJoin the University Program Council as you and your fellow students showcase your talents at Open Mic Night this Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. The event will be held in 2218 Student Center and free food will be served. Students will perform on a first-come, first-served basis, so come and show off your musical, poetic or comedic talents. On Tuesday, Jan. 27, UPC will show the free movie Eagle Eye in Haley 2370. Special election could allocate funds for Magnolia Avenue improvements

citylogoThe Auburn City Council has authorized a special election Tuesday, Jan. 27, for citizens to vote on the use of proceeds from the Special Five Mill Tax Fund to provide a number of infrastructure, public works and facility improvements throughout the city. This referendum does not involve the addition of any new taxes, but instead allows voters to approve how existing tax money is used. Two projects that would be funded affect Auburn University: improvements to the Donahue Drive and Magnolia Avenue intersection and the resurfacing and installation of raised crosswalks on Magnolia Avenue. Traveling film festival coming to art museum

shortcircuitlogo-color-lowresThe Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will present the Southern Arts Federation's second annual Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The films begin at 6 p.m. and the museum will provide a complimentary snack during the break at 7 p.m. Short Circuit is the only program that spotlights short films created by filmmakers living and working in the Southeast. This event, which is free and open to the public, is comprised of 12 short films, ranging from fiction and animation to experimental and documentary, all of which were selected for their artistic merit by a panel of media arts professionals. Scale Back Alabama participants’ class offered

scaleback_clip_image0024Bill Jackson, advisor on health/wellness/fitness, will be covering weight management, nutrition and exercise on Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The focus is on how and why we gain weight and how, as we age, it is more difficult to lose weight and keep it off. Also covered will be the importance of proper nutrition and exercise to the process. The class is open to anyone on campus and will be held in 2223 Student Center. Bring your own lunch. Lechner speaking during Green Lunch series

51t4fzp6b5l_sl500_The Office of Sustainability is hosting the first Green Lunch of the new year Wednesday, Jan. 28, at noon in 2218 Student Center. "Future of Architecture: Sustainable Architecture" will be presented by guest speaker Norbert Lechner, former professor in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction; Fulbright senior specialist; and author of "Heating, Cooling, Lighting: Sustainable Design Methods for Architects." Lechner states, "The use of energy is causing global warming, and buildings use about 48 percent of all the energy in the U.S. Thus, buildings are the main cause of global warming. Fortunately, buildings can be designed at little cost to be much more energy efficient, and they can get most of the remaining energy directly from the sun." Students, staff, faculty and members of the community are all welcome to attend.

Career Development Services presents The Next Big Game

biggameThe Next Big Game begins Thursday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. with "Interview Tips" at The Hotel at Auburn University. Career Development Services is happy to offer the annual series of free job search and career preparatory seminars. Representatives from companies and CDS staff members will present the information. Juniors and seniors in the job search process are encouraged to attend. An etiquette dinner will round out the series, and those students attending five or more sessions may attend the dinner for free. Others may register online for $25. The Miss Auburn University Scholarship Pageant is an official preliminary to the Miss Alabama and Miss America Scholarship Pageants. Please come support our 25 contestants as they compete in talent, evening wear, swimsuit and on-stage questions. The 2009 Miss Auburn University Scholarship Pageant will be held Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. The doors for the event will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 and tickets will be sold at the door or can be purchased in advance from the SGA office in the Student Center.

Auburn Gymnastics hosts All Auburn, All Orange vs. LSU

2681274Auburn Gymnastics will host an All Auburn, All Orange event versus LSU Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Spirit points will be awarded, as well as double Ignited points. The first 250 fans through the door will receive free Auburn orange water jugs.

Office of Sustainability presents Sustain-A-Bowl

press-imageOn Friday, Jan. 30, Auburn University's Office of Sustainability will launch Sustain-A-Bowl, a month-long campaign that aims to reduce water and electricity use and waste production around campus and in the community. Central to the campaign will be a competition between residence halls in the Hill and Quad to see which building can reduce its resource use the most over the course of the month compared to its own three-year average. Each week throughout the month of February, the Sustain-A-Bowl Committee, a group of student interns working in the Office of Sustainability, will take water, electricity and waste readings for each of the 22 halls in the Hill and Quad and announce a weekly winner. At the end of the month, the hall that has reduced its water, electricity and waste the most will be the overall winner. Those living off campus can compete, too. heyday2008In connection with Hey Day, the Student Government Association is sponsoring two scholarships funded by the proceeds of the event to the students that exemplify the ideals of this beloved tradition. The Student Government Association is looking for students who have shown that they promote friendliness on a regular basis, as well as those who give back to the Auburn community through their involvement on campus and their leadership ability. Auburn University Theatre premieres The America Play Podcast

The podcast is a weekly audio program featuring interviews with the faculty, students and professionals who make up the cast and production staff of Suzan-Lori Parks' "The America Play," which runs April 1-5 on the main stage of the Telfair B. Graduate Scholars Forum provides opportunity for sharing research

The Graduate School will host the 19th annual Graduate Scholars Forum in the Student Center March 10-11. The forum provides an opportunity for graduate students to gain experience by sharing their research and by improving their presentation skills. There will be monetary rewards for five different categories: engineering, sciences, humanities, proposals and posters. Submissions for research are due Feb. 22. Auburn graduate student receives APA award

starlaThe APA Ethics Committee and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) have announced the eighth annual prize for a graduate student paper on psychology and ethics, awarded to Starla Armstrong. Armstrong will receive $1,000, a round trip ticket to APA's 2009 Annual Convention in Toronto, Canada, plus three nights of hotel accommodation. The prize will be presented at a convention session. Also, her paper will be published in the American Psychological Association's Journal of Ethics and Behavior. This award is only given to one graduate student in the nation.

Art museum featuring 19th century photograph collection of Auburn alumnus

09_01_wiese_photo_boy1The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is presenting selected photographs from the collection of Auburn alumnus William Wiese for the first time at a museum. This group of Victorian-era European and American photographs of subjects in military regalia, accompanied by illustrated photo mounts and decorative albums, exemplifies the 19th-century passion for investigation, collection, categorization and aestheticism. The exhibition, titled “Uniform Proof: 19th Century Photography in the Collection of William Wiese,” will be displayed in the Chi Omega-Hargis Gallery now through April 4. Weise's collection portrays a different type of soldier, highlighting images of children and women in uniform. The children appear in uniform for school plays and pageants. The women are royalty, famous actresses, military field provisioners and spies. The portraits are 19th and 20th century originals, which include portraits of royalty like Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Healthy Marriage Initiative hosting regional conference

headerachmiAuburn University and its partners in the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative will present this year's regional conference Feb. 3-5 at the Montgomery River Walk Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center. The 2009 Regional Healthy Marriages, Healthy Families and Responsible Fatherhood Conference on Best Practices is open both to professionals and to citizens interested in learning about ways to build and sustain healthy relationships and stable marriages. Workshops will cover a variety of subjects including marriage, youth, parenting, fatherhood, faith-based and community organizational development and health and wellness. Speakers will include Alabama First Lady Patsy Riley, College of Human Sciences Dean June Henton, nationally known humorist and Auburn graduate Jeanne Robertson, and internationally known public speaker Gene Griessman. Nominations being accepted for Leischuck Awards

leischuck1The Office of the Provost is accepting nominations for the two Gerald and Emily Leischuck Endowed Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching. All deans, department heads and chairs, faculty, student organizations and alumni are invited to submit nominations by the deadline of March 2. The purpose of these $10,000 awards is to honor teaching excellence by Auburn faculty members who have demonstrated a commitment to student success through effective and innovative teaching and through advising and mentoring inside and outside the classroom. The two awards, at least one of which is to recognize undergraduate teaching, are open to full-time, tenured Auburn University faculty.
