Brown bag seminar looks at feminist theatre in 1920s
A Women's Studies Program brown bag seminar will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in 2225 Student Center. Sunny Stalter of the Department of English will present "A Woman's Place: Working Women on the American Expressionist Stage" about her research on feminist theatre in the 1920s. The talk is free and open to everyone. Feel free to bring your lunch with you. Send questions about the talk or about Women's Studies to Laura Obert at lco0001@auburn.edu. Stalter writes, "This talk discusses the importance of the working woman in American Expressionist theatre of the 1920s. Elmer Rice and Sophie Treadwell dramatize how urban space acts as an oppressive force in the lives of female office workers, yet they also envision the ways in which such figures escaped their routines. Examining these plays helps us understand what life was like for a new population of female workers, and why these characters struck such a chord in an age as conflicted about big business as our own."
