World Rabies Day 2008 is Sept. 28

Although rabies often seems to be a disease left over from the movie "Old Yeller," many eastern states are seeing a spike of rabid wildlife, yet very few cases of rabies occur among our human population. Rabies is a perfect example of the "One Health, One Medicine, One World" philosophy that is drawing veterinary medicine closer to human medicine. Collaboration among the health communities promotes vaccination of pets against rabies, enables wildlife vaccine programs across the eastern United States and stimulates discussion of post-exposure treatment of bite victims. U.S. citizens traveling abroad should consider being vaccinated against rabies when travel leads them to areas where rabies is common. Check the travelers' Web page at CDC.gov when making plans for missionary trips or for vacation travel to urban areas, even places like Mexico City. Sept. 28 is World Rabies Day. Join the students of Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine to "Make Rabies History." To learn more, visit www.worldrabiesday.org.
