Public Safety issues notice against burning toilet paper in Toomer’s Oaks
The Auburn University Department of Public Safety and Security and the Office of Campus Planning have issued a notice that setting fire to toilet paper on the Toomer's Oaks trees can permanently damage the trees and that offenders can be charged with arson. On Saturday night between 11 p.m. and midnight, someone threw lit toilet paper into the trees. The fire spread throughout the canopy and caused minor damage to the trees and to newly installed irrigation pipes. Police are looking at security video to possibly determine the identity of those who may have caused the damage. The trees have been a fixture at the junction of the campus and town for more than a century. During the summer, tree experts installed the irrigation pipes and gave the trees a health checkup and removed dead or damaged limbs. Okay Okay, I’m the person who called the fire department when the fire started to report it. The trees were not purposelly lit. I want to make this clear. I had been people watching for an hour prior and up to the event.
Someone dropped their cigarette and stomped out the fire. 5 or so minutes later the the fire restarted.
I hate when things are not printed correctly.
It was purely an accident.

I also called the fire dept. and was standing there right before the trucks arrived. I agree with Meagan, I believe it was an accident. It would have been much more obvious to me and the others standing at Bodega’s. Trust me when I say that if some threw flaming toilet paper, there would have been a huge ruckus. I think it was just a mindless act of tossing a cigarette butt.
