Cap and gown orders for summer grads

Cap and gown orders are being taken in the AU Bookstore located in Haley Center. The deadline to reserve your regalia is July 20, 2008. However, if you miss the deadline, you may still be able to reserve your regalia for another week. Please order your regalia ASAP. The price is $22 for Bachelors, $42 for Masters, and $47 for Doctorates. However, after the first deadline passes, the prices increase to $32 for Bachelors, $52 for Masters, and $57 for Doctorates. You may call the bookstore at 844-4241 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to reserve your regalia. Please have your head measurement (measurement of where a baseball cap would fit to nearest 1/2 inch) and credit card information ready when you call. You may also come to the bookstore where someone will measure your head for you. The bookstore does not keep regalia on hand so you must rent yours to guarantee having it for graduation. Regalia is mandatory to participate in the ceremony. For any further questions please feel free to contact the bookstore.

OCM invites students to submit photos for AU Web page

Want to see your own photo on the Auburn University homepage? Here is your chance! The Office of Communications and Marketing is asking students, faculty, and staff to send in your photos of student life-they can be from campus, study abroad trips, or anything Auburn-related. Each month, the OCM staff will choose an image to display on the AU homepage. Photos should be appropriate for the AU web audience and should contain no overt advertising. When you submit a photo, please include a brief description that we can use for a caption. All photo submissions should be sent to campusc@auburn.edu.

Support group for those who have loved ones at war

Auburn University Psychological Services Center (AUPSC) is continuing their support group for those who have loved ones at war. This group meets weekly and resumes meeting for the summer on Tuesday May 27, 2008 from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The group meets in Haley 1121. There is no charge to attend. If you have a loved one who is currently at war or is set to deploy in the future, you are invited to attend. AUPSC is excited to announce that beginning this summer we will have a child group that will meet at the same time. Fall 2008 Washington internship deadlines approaching

Works on paper portray the “Southern experience” at Jule Collins Smith Museum

Auburn Collects: Imprinting the South: Works on Paper from the Collection of Lynn Barstis Williams and Stephen J. Goldfarb opened May 24, 2008 and runs through August 23, 2008 at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. The exhibition features works on paper that represent a view of the South's social, economic, cultural and topographical identity. Images in the collection range from southern landmarks, picturesque cities, and scenes of cotton and tobacco farming to depictions of religion and recreation. The museum has created a pod cast available for download June 13 at www.jcsm.auburn.edu. iPods are also available to checkout at the front desk.

Williams steps down as Plainsman advisor, endows scholarship

Journalism Professor Ed Williams is serving his final semester as faculty adviser to The Auburn Plainsman. During his 23 years as adviser, The Plainsman was awarded 13 of its total 23 Pacemaker Awards, the college journalism equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize. Only one other collegiate newspaper, The Daily Texan at the University of Texas, has received more Pacemakers than The Plainsman. At the spring Plainsman banquet on April 26, 2008, Williams announced that he had established The Ed Williams Endowed Scholarship in Journalism to help students and to mark his 25 years of service to journalism at Auburn University and his 23 years as faculty adviser to The Auburn Plainsman. The endowment will provide scholarships for students in the journalism program in the Department of Communication and Journalism, College of Liberal Arts, who have demonstrated a commitment to journalism through working at The Auburn Plainsman.

Abdullah named director of Multicultural Center

Shakeer Abdullah, director of multicultural affairs at Capital University Law School, has been named director of Auburn University's Multicultural Center. He will begin the position July 1. In his role as director of multicultural affairs, Abdullah facilitates the success of underrepresented groups, with a particular focus on students of color. Currently, Abdullah is the advisor to all student organizations at Capital University Law School and supervises the proctoring of exams. He is involved in the recruitment and counseling of prospective students, and works to enhance the educational experience for all students through diversity and service learning programs.

English major wins university essay contest

The College of Liberal Arts has announced English major Allison Brown as the winner of their student essay contest titled "The University's Role in Creating Good Global Citizens." The contest was open to all university students this spring and was sponsored by the East Alabama Medical Center and the College of Liberal Arts. First runner-up of the essay contest was political science graduate student Brigitte Demasi and second runner-up was April Sheppard, a junior in sciences and mathematics. Brown was awarded a $500 prize sponsored by East Alabama Medical Center while the first and second runners-up were awarded $250 each by the College of Liberal Arts.

Engineering students qualify for undergraduate research fellowships

Engineering students Samantha Bird, Chris Ward and Karen Kirk have qualified to receive Auburn University undergraduate research fellowships during the 2008-2009 academic year. They have been chosen for year-long fellowships, receiving a stipend, project funds and travel expenses. Bird, a junior from Prattville, Ala., and Ward, a sophomore from Montgomery, Ala., are studying polymer and fiber engineering while Kirk, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., is studying mechanical engineering. Bird will conduct research with faculty member Maria Auad to study shape memory polymers, and Ward will work with faculty member Ed Davis to study the controlled release of tetracycline from Hallorsite-POE fibers. With guidance from faculty member Malcolm Crocker, Kirk plans to create models that can predict the rocket engine noise during launch and the turbulent boundary layer flow noise during flight of the new NASA Orion/Ares manned space vehicle.

B-E-T student team travels to India

While in India, the B-E-T student team took time to travel 100 miles from New Delhi to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal.Carrie Haywood (supply chain management) and Justin Gorman (chemical engineering), seniors in the Business-Engineering-Technology (B-E-T) minor, participated in this year's joint U.S.-India student project team. Along with mechanical engineering students Prateek Jain and Mukul Mittal of the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, Haywood and Gorman worked on an "infotainment system" for use in automobiles produced for U.S. and Indian markets. Haywood, Gorman, and Pradeep Lall, project supervisor and professor of mechanical engineering, visited IIT-Delhi in April to meet with their Indian team members in order to complete the project. The four students worked together for a week and toured several auto assembly and auto parts manufacturing companies around New Delhi. They met top- and middle-management employees to discuss the auto industry in India and to gather information about the nature of automotive infotainment systems needed for the country's automobile market.

Outreach Program Office – Summer Community Courses

This summer the Outreach Program Office will offer new classes in fabric dying, portrait photography, tropical fish keeping and card tricks. If you want to take any of the dancing classes or the basic handgun class, sign up soon, as these classes fill early. Children will have the opportunity to learn Spanish, magic tricks, and creative writing. This summer the Outreach Program Office will also offer test prep classes for ACT/SAT, GMAT and GRE. Tiger Transit announces hours for the break, graduation and summer

Tiger Transit will suspend normal operations May 8-21. The night security shuttle will suspend operations May 11-15. During the semester break May 8-21, Tiger Transit will operate only the stadium deck bus to Haley Center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Limited transportation to and from graduation ceremonies at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum on May 10 will be provided by Tiger Transit from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Transportation may be obtained from either the stadium parking deck and/or the Credit Union/Max Morris parking lot. Summer operations begin May 21 with limited service 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Effective May 22, the regular daytime routes will operate 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The external Night Transit will operate 5-8 p.m., Monday through Friday. The night security shuttle van service begins summer operations May 15 and operates 6 p.m.-7 a.m., Monday through Sunday. Beginning May 15, passengers must call 844-7400 to obtain night security shuttle van service. The name of the Magnolia Extension route has changed to Old Row-West Parking. Service on the Hill-West Parking and Haley-West Parking routes will be suspended during the summer semester. Passengers should also note the following realignment of bus stops for the East University, South Auburn and South College routes. The Southern Edge stop is now serviced by South College, and The Edge Apartment is serviced by the South Auburn route. The Edge and Research Park bus stop is located to the rear of the apartment complex on DeVall next to the Auburn University Research Park Building 1. Department of Theatre offering course in Ballet and Musical Theatre Dance

The Department of Theatre will have a course in Ballet and Musical Theatre Dance (THEA 2840) at the Telfair Peet Theatre Dance Studio during the second mini-semester June 3-Aug. 4, Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will get three credit hours; no prerequisite is required. The instructor will be Judith Nelson, associate professor of theatre. She has been a professional dancer, choreographer, actor and teacher for more than 25 years, working in musical theatre and dance companies in New York, Los Angeles and around the U.S. and Europe. AU Recycling holding PaperJam ‘08

AU Recycling will hold PaperJam '08 on the Haley Center concourse and Roosevelt concourse May 2, 5 and 7 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. You know how you always have a ton of notes at the end of the semester that you'll never need again? AU Recycling has decided to try to capture some of that paper before it hits the landfills. They also will be collecting any unwanted notebooks and binders.

Forest Preserve hosting storyteller Morrison

The Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve will host storyteller Renee Morrison of Calico Stories on Saturday, May 10, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Admission is $3; no registration is required. A “Telling Your Own Story” workshop will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Admission is $10 (includes morning program); registration is required. Guests may bring a brown bag lunch to eat between the program and workshop. The preserve is located on North College Street (Hwy. 147) just north of the AU Fish ponds.
