Severe weather and tornado watch

Auburn University is included in a tornado watch that will be in effect until 9 p.m. Tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds are possible. The National Weather Service expects the most significant weather to affect the area between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. The tornado watch may be extended, or additional watches/warnings may be issued. Please be mindful of changing weather conditions, as further AU Alerts for this storm system will only be sent should a warning be issued.

AU’s Emergency Management Group will continue to monitor the weather throughout the evening. However, since severe weather can develop quickly and without warning, please take time now to become familiar with current weather conditions and severe weather preparedness by visiting the National Weather Service’s website at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/bmx/, and be prepared to quickly move to safety if severe weather occurs. We encourage you to stay tuned to local weather sources as long as the potential for severe weather lasts.

If a tornado warning is issued for the University area, students, faculty and staff will be notified using the methods listed below. Please note: Technology allows the weather service to be more accurate in identifying geographic areas to be included in a tornado warning. If you receive notification of a tornado warning through any of these methods, move to safety immediately.

AU issues tornado warnings using the following methods: AU Alert via voice, text and email messages (sign up at www.auburn.edu/aualert); outdoor warning sirens; and severe weather tone alert radios

If a tornado warning is issued, AU classes are suspended until the warning is canceled. Immediately move to the nearest designated severe weather shelter area or the lowest level of the nearest building, away from windows, until you are notified that the warning is over.
